BabyCenter tips for breastfeeding successful for mums

Posted by Aru2012 Tuesday, 1 May 2012

Breastfeeding doesn't always happen easily. Some new mums find it hard to get started, while others may encounter problems later on. Here are some inspiring words from our BabyCenter India mums about how they made breastfeeding work for them.

The circumstances that we found ourselves in when Naman was born in August 2000 were unimaginable. I have no words to thank God, for He has not just given Naman to us, but also helped him survive. Yes, we had almost lost him. I am sure, medically, there were little chances of his survival, but I believe that our faith in God and my will to nurture him for my entire life gave him the strength to survive.

Today, Naman has grown to up and is a very strong boy. He is very resilient, especially, after having endured two surgeries before the age of one. He still undergoes a few medical interventions on a regular basis and he will have to continue to do so for another 10 years. He has a physical debility, a cleft-lip and palate, which requires correction. He also suffered IUGR (intra-uterine growth retardation) at birth. His birth-weight was less than two kilograms. Additionally, soon after he was born little Naman was fighting for life. Even as the doctors grew speculative, I did not give up! When I had to feed him breast milk for the first time, it was difficult and different from what I had expected. He could not suck! Moreover, he was weak and needed to be kept in the incubator with life-supporting systems. On the third day after his birth, I expressed a few drops and fed him with a small cup-like thing (paladai). By that time, he had already developed hypo-glycaemia. But after I began giving him breast milk he began recovering slowly and steadily. Therefore, I believe that breast milk was the "nectar" that saved Naman.

On the 10th day we brought little Naman home. He was thin and frail, but I continued expressing milk and feeding him. I would put him near my breasts several times a day and encourage him to suck. That way, I felt that he would at least be able to experience bonding. Also, little by little I was able to make him suck, which help in the production of my milk. It was indeed a 'Herculean task' to keep Naman well-fed, but I did not give up. Till Naman was 5 months I fed him breast milk. Sadly, after that he underwent his first corrective oral surgery and he could not suck anymore. Eventually my milk also dried up, but I still felt victorious for keeping him breast-fed until then. Today he is a very healthy and an intelligent 8-year old and I feel very content watching him grow.

Niah, came into to this world exactly a year ago on 12 July, 2007, to add that extra streak to our beautiful lives. But I was once again not spared by circumstances. About 20 days after she was born, I developed a condition - Arthritis (reactive -arthritis). I had very severe pain and even lifting my little one and feeding became an ordeal. For every feed somebody had to lift Niah and put her on my lap. I used to struggle and cry in pain. Just imagine what a torment it was for both the mother and the baby! But I didn't give up; I continued to breast-feed her till almost a month back, I had a sigh of relief for making the right choices.

I want to express my love and gratitude to God for making all of us as we are today...happy, peaceful, healthy and full of energy and zest to live a happy, long life! My message for all moms out there is - " Breast-feed your baby for as long as you wish and you feel like it Enjoy bonding with your baby and breast-feed them as long as you feel like it...this communion with your baby is a bliss and only you have the exclusive rights to it that no one in this entire universe could play proxy to it. In the end, I would like to say that no matter what circumstance is dished out to you don't ever give up". Cheers!

My baby is almost four months old. Before she completed three months, I had to return to work. Everybody suggested that I should gradually start weaning her and begin giving her supplementary food like Farex and other some formula milk. But I was not keen on beginning formula milk so early.

I strongly believe in the goodness of mother's milk; apart from being my baby's first food, it is the healthiest for my baby. Therefore, I didn't want to go for anything like Farex so early in my baby's life. Therefore, I continued expressing and feeding breastmilk to my baby even after I joined work. Before I leave for work in the morning and after I return home in the evening, I feed my baby. It's almost one month since I joined work, and I feel great about the fact that my baby gets to drink breastmilk even when I am away from her.

I live in a joint-family. Therefore, I do not get to spend any time with my baby alone. But in the evenings after I return from work, I feed my baby. This is the time when nobody is around and I get to spend time with her. This is the time that my baby and I spend with each other; we play, talk, laugh and try doing new things together. Breastfeeding my baby gives me some of the most wonderful moments of my day and I am sure it is the same for most working mommies. Also, I believe that it has helped me stay slim after my delivery.
